What an OFAC screening returns

Possible matches
Every listed party whose name matches the name you screened, at or above the minimum score.
Match score
A score from 80 to 100. The default minimum is 95. Lowering it catches misspellings, at the cost of more false matches.
How the name matched
Whether the match is on the party's primary name, an alias or a weak alias.
Party details
Aliases, birth dates, nationalities, countries, addresses and identifiers where the lists publish them, with links to the source.
Narrowing and conflicts
Screen by party type, country or, for a person, birth date. Listed parties that do not fit score lower, and a conflict in birth date or country is flagged.
Data freshness
Which lists were searched and, where it is known, how recent each list's data is.

A match is a lead for review, not a finding

A name match does not prove that the business or owner is the listed party. Entitylight returns each possible match with its score, aliases and the details the list publishes, so your team can compare it with the applicant.

Entitylight does not clear or reject a business for you, and it does not provide a risk score. Your team applies its own credit policy. To see who is behind a business first, read how business verification works.

How an OFAC screening runs

  1. 1

Enter a business or owner name

Screen the business, or the name of an owner or officer. The state record from a lookup lists the officers the state has on file.

  2. 2

Entitylight searches every list at once

One screening searches all 20 lists and answers with every listed party that matches.

  3. 3

    Review the matches

Each possible match shows its score, how the name matched and the lists it is on. If the lists could not be searched, the screening says so and is not charged.

Questions about OFAC screening

What does an OFAC screening check?

A name is checked against 20 lists, including OFAC's SDN and non-SDN lists. The others cover UN, EU, UK and other national sanctions, US exclusion lists, INTERPOL Red Notices and politically exposed persons.

How is this different from OFAC's own search tool?

OFAC's tool searches OFAC's lists. Entitylight searches those and 18 other lists in one screening, gives each match a score, and runs from the app or the API.

Can I screen owners and officers?

Yes. Screen any business or person name. The state record in a lookup lists the officers the state has on file, so you can screen each one.

What does a match score mean?

The score shows how closely a listed party matches the name and details you screened, from 80 to 100. The default minimum is 95. A match is a lead for review, not a finding.

Can I screen through the API?

Yes. The API screens a name and returns every match at or above your minimum score in the same response.

How much does an OFAC screening cost?

Each screening counts as one lookup. Your first 20 lookups are free, and paid plans start at $299 a month for 400 lookups. A screening where no list could be searched is not charged.
